Mother 3 was released in Japan only for the Game Boy Advance in 2006. Plans for a western release of Mother were revealed at the 2015 Nintendo World Championships, and the localized game was made available on the Wii U Virtual Console under the name EarthBound Beginnings on June 14, 2015. A copy of the Mother translation was later found and circulated on the Internet under the unofficial title EarthBound Zero to differentiate it from its officially-released sequel, EarthBound. Its release was cancelled due to Nintendo of America shifting focus to the SNES. This game was completely localized and set to be released in North America in the Fall of 1991 under the title " EARTH BOUND". The gameplay is heavily reminiscent of the Dragon Quest series, though the appeal stems from its abandonment of other common features that were present in role-playing games at the time, perhaps most notably taking place in a modern day area opposed to the fantasy worlds that were common at the time.
